E-lit has been defined by N. Katherine Hayles as literature that is ‘digitally born’. This chapter by Ivan Callus and Mario Aquilina therefore, explores the question of whether it can be considered a post-human phenomenon. To fulfil this objective, they consider E-lit as a post-literary space and its affinities with the seemingly post-human aspects of literary output in the Digital Age. They conclude the chapter with the statement: “E-lit is itself as complex and diverse a metaphor of post-human desire and its discontentment as any that could be encountered. [Mis]reading it, we [mis]read the post-human.”

Digital literature is often understood as a threat to traditional print literature and is also questioned about its literary merit and value. In this chapter therefore, Adam Hammond observes the challenges and questions posed against it. Hammond observes how ‘the sphere of the digital is understood as one of distraction, passivity and superficiality in contrast to the print sphere which provides an environment for an active, sustained and concentrated reflection.’ However, he concludes it with the understanding that ‘The advent of the digital heralds not the death of literature, but an opportunity to look at it with fresh eyes.’

In order to understand how the changes brought about by the digital medium to  literary practice, it is important to study how the previous mediums, throughout history have affected literature. This chapter by Adam Hammomd, therefore, helps in locating digital literature within the history of the relationship between medium shifts and literary thought as well as provides an insight into the questions that are raised with each medium shift regarding the nature and scope of literature.

In an age of medium shift, it is crucial to first observe how it affects our previous understandings, perspectives and conceptions regarding a phenomenon. It is also important to observe how such changes reshape the society and individual as well. Hence, this chapter by Hammond explores the questions ‘that accompany the shift from printed to digital forms: how reading is changing in the digital age and how our shifting reading practices are reshaping our society and ourselves.’

This research paper by Katherine Hayles provides an introduction to the field of Electronic literature and defines how it is different and distinct from traditional and digitised print literature. It also provides an insight into how E-lit has evolved as a genre throughout media history and how that has significantly affected reading and writing practices of literature.
