Youth Festival 2018

Image
This year's youth festival was a spectrum of the various talents and the celebration of young energy and spirit. Every event had something new to project before the people. Whether it was poetry or drama or folk music, every competition was full of sportsman's spirit. The joy of participation was greater than the motive to win and that's what made the three day festival enjoyable. Most importantly, the winner and loser both received applause for their efforts which helped keep up the spirit of participation. I was able to be a part of these events: 1) Drama [2 plays] 2) Poetry recitation 3) Western solo singing Drama: The plays ranged from the ones set in classical times to the ones dealing with modern day social problems. Bhrugu Samhita dealt with the themes of entanglement of relations, the importance of progeny and also how parentage formed the most important parameter of one's identity, etc. Analyzing the play based on Aristotelian or Platonic parameter...

Wordsworth's Preface To Lyrical Ballads

This post is in reference to the questions asked here:  http://dilipbarad.blogspot.com/2014/09/short-learning-video-on-wordsworths.html The publication of Lyrical Ballads, in 1798, marked a new beginning in the literary theory and criticism. The efforts for a Romantic revival were ongoing way before Wordsworth and Coleridge's contribution. However, we can say that their work marks the climax of the Romantic age. Just as any new literary theory, Romanticism was also met with a lot of censure from critics, so much so that Wordsworth's poems were often considered 'silly' and 'childish' things, composed of 'meanness of language and inanity of thought' as Coleridge mentions later in his Biographia Literaria. It was because of this reason that Wordsworth tried to defend his creed in the Preface to the second edition of Lyrical Ballads in 1801. Romanticism began as a reaction against the earlier Enlightenment ( Neo Classical) ideology of using clas...

Thinking Activity: Dryden's Essay on Dramatick Poesie

Image
This post is in reference to the questions asked here: http://dilipbarad.blogspot.com/2015/09/drydens-essay-on-dramatic-poesy-short.html The publication of John Dryden's essay in 1668, marked a new beginning in the field of literary criticism. So much was the contribution of the essay that, Dryden is still considered the Father of English criticism. The reason is quite simple. For the first time we find an English writer giving a proper definition of a play after Aristotle. We surely had critics like Philip Sidney before him, but none of them ever tried to define them according to their understanding. They just built upon the foundations laid by Aristotle. Dryden, though not completely disregarding Aristotle's ideas, tried to come up with a definition which was suitable to his times as well. If we want to compare Dryden's definition with that of Aristotle, let's take a look at both of them: Let's first list out the common points between the...

Biographia Literaria: Thinking Activity

How to distinguish a poem from a novel, essay, or any prose work, has been an on going discussion since the beginning of literature. Several scholars and critics have tried to define the boundaries of both these literary compositions, with no final result. One such critic, originally a poet, was S.T Coleridge. Being a Romantic poet, Coleridge's ideas regarding poetry and the factors distinguishing it from prose, are at some point philosophical and somewhat ambiguous. Especially, his claim that, what distinguishes poetry from a poem is the poet's imaginative skill, is a characteristically Romantic idea, in my opinion. The general impression of the difference between a prose work and a poem is that of the arrangement of the words. But we can point out that it is often not so. We can however say that, the way of using language in both the compositions is what differentiates the one from the other. And yet, we'd be wrong, as we often have poetic prose and prosa...
